GWSIG Monthly Meeting Minutes/Meeting41a
International Game Developers Association
At GDC this year, we were able to hold both a real meeting where business was discussed, and a social event where networking was the prime goal.
For the agenda at the meeting, we took a look at all the great things we did this year, and talked about what we would like to do next year.
One of the great things about meeting at GDC is that we get to hear from people who can't make it to the online meetings. The bad thing about meeting at GDC is that we don't get to hear from people who can't make it to GDC.
So don't take any of this as a "mandate" - consider it a great brainstorming session. We want to hear what everyone thinks about all of these ideas!
THIS YEAR
- Our new book was completed! (Writing for Videogame Genres) and we
promoted our earlier books. (Though we can still do better with this!)
- We had a great event at Austin.
- We're getting pretty good at producing Quarterlies (this time we're
even getting some extra material from that effort published on Gamasutra.)
- We got a great FAQ about portfolios, hopefully we can get more FAQs
written up in the coming year.
NEXT YEAR
- We need better advocacy for the craft of writing in games, and
better advocacy for our SIG.
- We need better outreach to potential members.
- We should do better to include journalists and advocate for, and
promote great game journalism.
- We have some great opportunities to get our names/abilities out in
front of developers with the new IGDA Magazine.
- We should consider doing another book. Ideas on this include:
- a book on how to break in - a videogame style guide - a book of scripts from popular games - idea/creativity sparkers
- We really are getting a new website, and that will open up
opportunities for better organizing ourselves. The website is currently in closed beta, so honest, this is coming.
- We could provide better information about how to write/negotiate
contracts. Including scoping projects. (Could we work with the new Legal SIG on this?)
- We should advocate for standardizing materials for voice actors.
- We should make better ties to other SIGs, for instance the Indie SIG
and the Audio guys.
- One problem we face is existing scripts locked up by NDAs. Perhaps
if we worked with the Indie guys, they would be more willing to share?
- We could also possibly partner with the Indie SIG to help get more
writers work with indies.
- Work to get people who have an Expo Pass into the IGDA SIG meetings.
- Consider, do we want our own conference? Is the Austin GDC
sufficient? Would we be able to have more cross-over with other SIGs in our own conference?
- Work to build a curriculum for educators on Game Writing
- Shall we hold joint SIG meetings at GDC next year? (For instance,
the Writing SIG and the Education SIG, the Writing SIG and the Indie SIG?)
- Should we have our own Writing Summit at GDC? (As there is an
Education Summit, etc.)
- We need to have a "bookshelf" of recommended reading, and a canon of
games demonstrating both essential gameplay and story.
