Game Preservation SIG/White Paper/2008 brainstorm
International Game Developers Association
- Note: This white paper has been written and with information and downloads available here.
This page is intended for brainstorms, ideas, suggestions for organization, etc., for the first IGDA Preservation SIG White Paper. This first white paper, which we hope to finish by GDC 2009, will focus on the issues, needs and value of game preservation and history. It will basically seek to answer the question, why bother with game preservation? A special focus will be, why should the game industry care about game preservation? Answering these questions will begin our work of addressing issues of outreach, developer awareness, contact with developers & designers regarding archival materials, etc.
And, by the way, we also need title suggestions.
Although the intention is to really open up the discussion up to any ideas and suggestions, let's start with a few categories:
- Contributors -- please add your name and affiliation here if you would like to make a substantial contribution to editing of white paper drafts, i.e., join the editorial committee.
- Core Concepts -- suggestions and thoughts on the main concepts and themes of the White Paper. Please put your name down with a particular concept or theme, if that is where you would like to focus your effort. We may break up the project and proceed in sub-groups devoted to particular themes.
- Compelling Examples -- identify and describe cases that show the benefits of game preservation or what the game industry or game culture loses without it.
