Details

In 2005, the IGDA Diversity SIG put together the "Game Developer Demographics" survey. Nearly 6,500 people participated, providing valuable resources for not only the SIG, but the game development community at large. Similarly, the Game Writers SIG (GWSIG) is approaching a survey project.

During the recent Game Writers SIG (GWSIG) meeting at GDC:06, several vital questions came up. Unfortunately, although individual writers can provide personal experiences, we as a SIG are currently unable to answer those vital questions definitively while reflecting a large scale of cases.

Initially working from questions that arose at the GDC:06 meeting and using last year's Writers Guild of Great Britain (WGGB) questionnaires, the GWSIG is putting together two separate online surveys--one for the writers, one for employers. The results will flesh out the White Paper, contribute interesting article content for the Quarterly, and will provide valuable information to the public on the GWSIG site.

Plan of Action

  • Phase 1: Develop Surveys
  • Review WGGB questionnaires and hone survey for Game Writers.
  • Review WGGB questionnaires and hone survey for Employers.
  • Finalize surveys and send to Game Writers Committee mailing list for feedback.
  • Revise surveys based on feedback.

  • Phase 2: Launch Surveys
  • 1. Build surveys using the PHPSurveyor tool on the IGDA server.
  • 2. Launch surveys on GWSIG Site.
  • 3. Advertise surveys on mailing lists and forums.

  • Phase 3: Results
  • 1. Results will be automatically compiled by PHPSurveyor.
  • 2. Distribute results to IGDA GWSIG web site and mailing list.
  • 3. Integrate results into White Paper and Writers Quarterly.
