Getting started as a volunteer
International Game Developers Association
Volunteers are vital to the development and maintenance of this wiki. This page is a starting point and guide for getting started with the wiki.
What does a volunteer do?
A volunteer can help by:
- Maintaining the quality of pages
- Smoothing out and optimizing of layout
- Typo correction
- Suggestions for new content
- Helping new users get familiar with the wiki
- You might eventually help other volunteers get going!
- Adding new content (of course)
What is expected of a volunteer?
The commitment that each volunteer brings to working on the wiki varies from person to person. One of the great advantages of a wiki is that anyone can do (pretty much) any edit at any time from anywhere. So volunteers will naturally work together to maintain the wiki, help new users, etc.
As a volunteer you are expected only to treat others with respect and your work on the wiki with care. Please familiarize yourself with our style and organizational guidelines (they are fairly brief and minimal) and always act like a team player and remember that the openness and friendliness of this community is what makes it work so well.
What is a good starting point for a volunteer?
A great place for new volunteers to get started is editing for style and typos. Pick a specific category of wiki entries, or even better a set of pages that are a part of a WikiProject, learn about the style guidelines and intent of those articles as a whole, and then go look at a bunch of articles and see what needs improving. Often a list of articles that are in obvious need of attention will already by compiled as part of the WikiProject -- that's a great place to start.
You might want to read Learning MediaWiki to learn about how to get around and edit effectively in this wiki.
