We kicked started the new New with the first meeting on Thursday, 15th Feb at the MICA Building, courtesy of MDA (http://www.mda.gov.sg).

The following presentations were featured:

  • Speakers from Lucas Arts Singapore sharing their studio and work they are doing in Singapore
  • Danien Chee, showcasing a new job search website specifically targetted for creative industries (http://www.jobberwokky.com),
  • Alvin Yap from Nexgen Studio showcasing their company 3G mobile multiplayer game and a case study of their development
  • Eugene Goh and Travis Ho showcasing their winning works from the 30 hour Codeathon

Introduction

The meeting started at 7 pm, and majority of attendees arrived by 7.15pm, the meeting was started. The meeting ended slightly later around the scheduled time at 8.30pm. In total, there were about 70+ attendess.

Ian Pang from LucasArts Singapore stared off the meeting with a video presentation what the studio were developing, mainly in the the film, mobile games and next generation games. They also showed their studio working conditions, and stressed Lucas is definitely not a sweatshop. In conclusion, they are looking to hire more people and encouraged people to join them

Demonstration of JobberWokky.com, a new job search website targetted for creative industries

Danien Chee demonstrated his new job search website, jobberwokky.com, aim specifically at the creative industries for the Asia region. The unique features of the website is it allows employers to define custom job categories and skills, so job seekers are able to search through the job listings effectively.

The website is free to use now in its beta stage. When it goes live, Danien promises it will be very affordable compared to other job sites, as it is targetted to help small studios in the region.

Alvin Yap, founder of Nexgen studio, a local studio that does mobile and PC game development, shares their latest mobile game project. They have developed a 3G mobile real time multiplayer game, which can be linked with players on the PC. Alvin shares his experience and challenges encountered, especially with different mobile sets, and differing telco standards for the game.


Showcase from winners from 30 hours Codeathon

In Dec 2006, just before the Asia Game Developer Summit, Nanyang Polytechnic held a 30 hour codeathon contest. Contestants were allowed a maximum team of 5 members, and the theme of the project was "Growth". Luck Yong from NYP shared photos from Codeathon event.

Next, we had the two winning teams presented their work.

The first presenter was Travis, Bruce and Weiquan from the GDG (Game Developing Group) from National University of Singapore. They were a team of 5 members, which developed a fish game demonstrating fish swarm eating other fishes to grow bigger.

Next up, we had presentation from Eugene Goh, a freelance game developer. His team consists of "me, myself, and I", solo developer. In hindsight, he regretted not bringing an artist but nevertheless he developed a unique 2D physics game which is about joining objects together to form a spaceship.
