Crediting in games has become a hot topic in recent years. As development teams grow bigger and outsourcing becomes more prevalent, the number of specific roles and titles for each employee has become more diverse and granular. In the past, individual games have taken an informal view of how to credit the roles of its developers, causing much diversification in published job titles.
This diversification can cause confusion of the specific duties of an employee from the viewpoint of a potential employer. If he or she sees that a potential hire worked as a “Code Monkey” for a previous employer, what can they ascertain was that person’s duties?
At present, the IGDA Credits Committee has created an initial list of Credit Names that comprises a broad survey of the many and varied roles in the industry. This is a first attempt at trying to identify and define the specific roles of game developers to help the industry standardize its crediting procedures.
The IGDA Credits Committee welcomes the game industry to view, use or suggest revisions to the list. The current list can be found at the following web address.
