Ludeography

Strikes me that the Romans would have gone for Ludography if they were going to go so far as to promote a diversion like games into something worthy of accademic study. (It has always struck me as funny that the term interlude has entered into common parlance to reflect a break between, say accademic studies, during which one might play games!)

Having reviewed what I wrote earlier I can see that I was in error, but I'm going to make up.. Ludography, as suggested would be an attempt to catalog games titles in some way I would guess. But I think that would be a outside of the scope of this forum, especially since there are already better places to do that (www.mobygames.com for instance).

Better, would be what I misread on the first edit, namely the fasionable neologism, ludology. As I recall logos refers to study and obviously ludos refers to games, so I would imagine that pages headed ludology would refer to the accademic study of games.

Good subtitles might include:

Anatomy: What are the components of a game worthy of study. Metrics: measurements of how people play games. Mind: Because of course we are talking about computer games, and I would suggest that what makes computer games unique above other games is that the computer takes part as a game player.

In fact that's not a bad category altogether, in fact I'm going to put that on another thread.

Scope

So here I am again, I believe the IGDA is all about computer game.. checks.. hmm.. here's the mission statement:

The International Game Developers Association is a non-profit membership organization that advocates globally on issues related to digital game creation. The IGDA's mission is to strengthen the international game development community and effect change to benefit that community.

So we are talking about digital games, that's a bit wooly in my opinion (no offence). Some games are facilitated by digital means but are otherwise not really computer games after all..

Actually, on reflection this isn't really taking us anywhere useful is it? I mean we can limit the scope of what Ludology refers to in any way we want (especially as this is a wiki, nice and dynamic).

List of Lists

I created this as a way to try and get people more involved in this Wiki. Dela got rid of it. If you think it should or should not exist, please say something here, so we can build this Wiki together. KalevTait 14:56, 8 May 2005 (EDT)

(2005.05.08 PaulJForest begin) In wikis, especially MediaWiki like this one, it is typical to automagically generate these kinds of lists with "categories." You may want to read up on this powerful technique in the MediaWiki user's manual.

Bascially, it is possible to declare a page to be part of a category by adding a special link, typically at the end of the page, but before any links to translated pages. This makes a given page a member of a category, and creates a link to that category's page. The category page itself can have a simple description, and a list of all members of the category is automagically generated and maintained. Category pages can themselves be declared themselves to be a member of a category, thus it is possible to create a directed graph of categories (which may contain loops).

Browse around on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page to get a feel for how categories work. They appear at the bottom of every page there.

Anyhow, there's an easier way to create a list of lists using categories. (2005.05.08 PaulJForest end)

I suspect Dela just got rid of it accidentally as she was moving things around and doing massive edits. Especially since she hasn't been back to defend it. wendy

Toronto Chapter

I would like to create a page for the Toronto chapter, may I do so? Given the "list of lists" debate above, it may be better to talk about this kind of stuff before committing.

I don't think this is something that you need to discuss before doing. I was only creating the debate above as it was clear I was in disagreement with another editor. Unless you've been given some reason to think that someone else doesn't want a Toronto chapter page, I would say, go for it. KalevTait 15:10, 8 May 2005 (EDT)
Agreed, it's in there (IGDA Toronto). When else this week would I have two consecutive hours to get it right? :) Just to be sure, I emailed the Toronto chapter president. PaulJForest 2005.05.09 12:49

Adding Category:Lists to main page

This page strikes me as a useful page to have availabe within one click from the Main Page:

http://www.igda.org/wiki/index.php/Category:Lists

However, it seems to be a special case situation where it doesn't like to be added as a list item within a template. I've described the problem on the IGDA Forums looking for a support response from someone who understands why this might happen:

http://www.igda.org/Forums/showthread.php?s=08b3a780a4e7b7fe24d9e2326bc0f190&threadid=17250

An explanation would be great.  :)

Site Design

The current design makes all buttons (like 'Save page' or 'Show preview' or even 'Search' on the homepage) look unavailable. Years of application design have trained users to see a "grayed out" button as one that needs further input before it can be used. Think of installation programs that display a gray version of the 'continue' button until you finish filling in an appropriate serial number or activation code. When the correct data is input, then the button turns from gray to black to show that you can click it and get results. The current design for buttons on this wiki looks the same way. Like it's waiting for more content or something before I can save this page, or search for a term etc. 22:00, 23 Sep 2005 (EDT)

Are the buttons not waiting for user interaction? :) I see what you mean though, and I'll devise something more user-friendly. Adraeus 22:53, 23 Sep 2005 (EDT)

IE Compatible Header?

Is there anything we can do to make this site IE compatible? Right now it looks like the title for every page is hidden and cutoff by the IGDA logo. (I haven't noticed any other problems though I can't guarantee there aren't any).

I'm a big Firefox fan myself but since 75-85%+ of the general browsing public are on IE we should make sure the site's still usable for them. Dubane 14:22, 26 Sep 2005 (EDT)

Working on it. Also see the bulletin board Adraeus 18:21, 26 Sep 2005 (EDT)
Looks like this is resolved with the latest round of updates. Thanks! Dubane
Since I'm not an expert with CSS, I just reverted the style to the defaults. In the future, I will reimplement the changes that once were, but that will be after the CSS is correct. Adraeus 23:34, 23 Oct 2005 (EDT)

Projects

I hope you guys don't mind, but in an effort to make the front page a little more inviting I've added a section for a list of projects with icons. --Skorpion 03:35, 25 Jan 2007 (EST)

"IGDA Wiki Initiatives" or "IGDA Wiki Projects"? (+archive this talk page?)

There is a title "IGDA Wiki Projects" on the main page, linking to what are categorised by the authors as Initiatives. Which is the correct term? Some of the pages need sorting out and might as well get it right for all of them, and sort the pages which say "Project" or "Initiatives". They could be both of course, but that is very confusing (I don't mind which one it is, but it must be one!)

Also, this talk page is rather long, and out of date now, worth archiving? - Andrew 15:31, 10 July 2007 (EDT)

I prefer the term 'project' (which may be obvious, given that I created the portal we're talking about >;) ) because it's more clear and concise, and probably even a little more accurate, but 'initiative' certainly sounds more official, so if anybody thinks we need a bit more legitimacy on the front page, feel free to change 'projects' to 'initiatives' (although personally I think it will sound particularly stilted). -Skorpion 04:03, 13 September 2007 (EDT)
I might change the "IGDA Initiatives" category to a projects category at some point in the future, and make sure every project page is in it. You're the authority on it :) - also, nice icons. :) - Andrew
Thank you. So this is what it's like to be an authority >:) --Skorpion 22:03, 17 September 2007 (EDT)

Programming & Technology pages

This entire section and all its subpages are broken and entirely inaccessible. Any ideas on how to move and rename them correctly? - Andrew 11:22, 11 July 2007 (EDT)

Unfortunately, the only way I know to fix these links is to find each one and change '&' to 'and'. --Skorpion 04:05, 13 September 2007 (EDT)
Hmm, damn, meaning that we can't do them ourselves because, of course, the pages are inaccessible! Would need the wiki DB admin to do it manually I guess, although I'm not sure who that is - does Darren Torpey have DB admin access? If so I'll email him. - Andrew 07:26, 14 September 2007 (EDT)
All the programming patterns pages were still there, just with the new names, so I fixed all the links. I don't know what happened to the rest of the programming pages (actually, I don't even remember what was in them). --Skorpion 22:08, 17 September 2007 (EDT)
